Mindful Meditation

What is Mindful Meditation?

  • Mindfulness is about being fully in the moment, here and now
  • The mind is designed to ‘think’ and just like any muscle we can train it once we have awareness and technique
  • Mindfulness helps us to become fully aware of our thinking, our experience and our feelings
  • Which helps us to focus and feel more peaceful overall

What to expect during a mindful meditation session?

Some people have asked me what to expect during a mindful meditation session and do they have to wear special clothes or sit like a buddha. In a typical mindful meditation session you can expect to sit comfortably yet in an alert posture (upright back). This can be in a chair or yoga mat. People choose whether to have their hands resting in their laps or on their knees pointing palms up. The session will begin with a focus upon your breathing or an object in the room. At some point your eyes will rest shut and you will go deeper into the meditation. Meditation is not the same as being asleep or in a trance, it is an alert awakened peaceful state of mind. People new to meditation do sometimes drift into a doze or notice the need to cough or sneeze. This is normal and soon passes. The meditation is guided by music or the facilitator and often stimulates mind images or focus upon single thoughts or no thoughts at all. At the end everyone opens their eyes and feels refreshed and alert ready for the rest of their day. The difference between a power nap and meditation is the insights that occur during a meditation can be very powerful and afterwards people generally feel invigorated and alive.
